Cali-lounge

begins when the crickets start
when the evening breeze begins its slow crawl across the desert floor
to chase on the day's last mirage.
It begins when fireflies spark the dry river bed
& coyotes begin their dance for dinner
trotting past the nests and nestling, the tried & tumbling.
It begins porch time, after dinner, when kids & grandpas come out
to scream & grump in the cooling pass of day, all to the
backdop of Mexican radio, pouring AM from a passing cutlass.
It begins just after the last train, doppler in the distance
haunts you & grounds you at the same time,
delivering the very thing you've missed all week-
some nameless comfort....

Zabalba

Jaguar breath wisps through mahogany wood
Auk circle the jade sky, while spider monkeys dance
their forest, tail-writing the song of the quetzal queen
recording every drop of her love, bloodlet for the king.
This jungled temple in carpetted moss, once ungrown,
now heaven's mirrored mountain, is full of your life.
The quill.
The alter,
Alive with your spirit, your rhthyms, the gifts of your womb,
song of your eyes- all dancing in hummingbird flight.
Carican. Your selfless love and the spirits of this world
travel from you through me, each vein full of the Snake,
the feather, the jade mask i dream of wearing.

She's so (Succulent)    listen

Smooth on the outside
Fleshy on the in
Oh you want to touch...
But the spines lay hidden.
Never thought you'd find her
Alone in this place
With a few havalina
and some tumbleweeds
    (and the lizards that roam
    the desert seas.)

chorus:

In her element (she'll weather all)
She's so succulent
  (Saguaro stand tall)
Little bit recalcitrant
 (but you'll never mind)
Just listen
Watch
Wait.

Shifting sand dunes

    Endless blue sky
    That sweet, wet mirage...
And your mouth is so dry.
    You say 'please come closer
    Oh distant rain!'
    See, you're so thristy
    But why isn't she?
    (Cause dust devils swirled
     her tempest tea.)

chorus

She'll teach you all you need to know
If you trust that she will
    While Ocotillo wave at you
    and Coyotes howl.
So, you want to move here?
    Ya, sure you'll survive
    Like the other horny toads
    in her shadow cool
    (Just never sweat
    and never drool.)
